Sometimes a stove problem looks simple at first, but the real cause only becomes clear after you take the appliance apart and see what’s actually going on inside.
This service call was in Beaverton, WA, part of the appliance repair service area we cover across Southwest Washington and the Portland metro. The homeowner had contacted us before and asked if we could stop by and check a Frigidaire gas range for their tenants. Over the phone the description was straightforward: only two burners were lighting while the others were clicking, gas was flowing, but the flame wouldn’t ignite. They could also smell gas.
Situations like this come up fairly often. The first thing we usually do is slow down and look at the condition of the burners and the ignition system before replacing any parts.

Initial Inspection
We scheduled a time and arrived for the diagnostic visit. The tenant immediately showed us what was happening.
The situation was exactly as described. Out of all the burners, only two would ignite normally. The others kept clicking, gas was flowing, but no flame appeared.
When a stove behaves like this, the ignition system is the first suspect. But experience says not to rush. In real-world service work, around ninety percent of cases like this turn out to be simple contamination of the burners or ignition electrodes.
Cooktop Disassembly and Cleaning
The cooktop was completely disassembled. Right away it was clear that the stove hadn’t been cleaned thoroughly in quite some time. The burner heads, caps, electrodes, and mounting areas all had buildup from grease and food residue. Over time that kind of buildup interferes with proper ignition.
A proper cleaning takes time. In this case the work took about an hour and a half. Each part was removed, cleaned carefully, and reinstalled.

Testing After Cleaning
After the cooktop was reassembled, we tested the range again.
Sometimes the issue disappears completely at this stage. Unfortunately, in this case the behavior didn’t change. Gas was still flowing, the clicking was clearly audible, but only two burners would ignite.
When a thorough cleaning doesn’t change anything, that’s usually a strong sign that the spark module is weakening. It may still produce the clicking sound, but the voltage is no longer strong enough to send a consistent spark to every electrode.
Diagnosis
Appliance: Frigidaire Gas Range
Model: FGGF3030PFA
Failed Component:
Range Spark Module
Original part #316262404
Replacement part #5304508269
The spark module is responsible for sending high voltage to the ignition electrodes at each burner. When it starts to fail, the symptoms are usually the same: you hear the clicking, gas flows normally, but the spark is weak or inconsistent.
Spark Module Replacement
After discussing the repair with the customer, the replacement part was ordered. During the follow-up visit the spark module was installed and the cooktop was reassembled.
After installation we ran a final test. All burners now ignite immediately, and the stove is working properly again.

Repair Cost (Example From This Job)

Repair Summary
Appliance: Frigidaire Gas Range
Model: FGGF3030PFA
Problem:
Burners were clicking but not igniting. Only two burners would light while the others released gas but failed to ignite.
- dirty burner heads
- contaminated ignition electrodes
- weak spark module
- poor electrical contact in the ignition system
Repair Performed
- complete cooktop disassembly
- deep cleaning of burners and ignition components
- replacement of spark module (#5304508269)
Result:
All burners ignite normally and the cooktop operates correctly.
Why Cleaning Always Comes First
Some technicians jump straight to replacing the spark module, but that isn’t always the right first step. When burners are covered with grease and food residue, the ignition electrodes may lose proper contact and the spark becomes unreliable.
The correct diagnostic sequence usually looks like this:
- disassemble the cooktop
- clean the burners and ignition electrodes
- test the system again
- only then decide whether a component needs to be replaced
In many cases cleaning alone solves the problem. In this repair the spark module itself had weakened, so replacing it was necessary.
How the Ignition System Works in a Gas Range
Gas ranges use an electronic ignition system that sends high voltage to spark electrodes near each burner.
- gas flows to the burner
- the spark module generates high voltage
- a spark jumps from the electrode and ignites the gas
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my gas stove click but not light?
The most common causes are dirty burner heads, contaminated ignition electrodes, or a weak spark module.
